wtf

Sometimes people do things while under the influence alcohol that they regret. Sometimes those regrets involve breaking the law. I'm sure a common thought of those who have done such things is, "Man, I wish the fact that I was drunk could get me off the hook for that." I'm sure we can all agree that it's good that it's not the case. But here in Korea, it is.

I'm not just talking about minor infractions here, like pissing on a sidewalk or throwing a brick through a window. I'm talking about murder and sexual abuse. Here, people can actually get a commuted sentence for such crimes. I just learned of this today. It's, pardon the phrasing, fucked up.

Here's a link to a news article from two years ago concerning the topic. If you don't want to read it all, I'll provide you with the worst of it here. It is beyond belief:

The nation was shocked after it was learned last month that a 57-year-old man raped 8-year-old child, leaving her sexually disabled and having to rely on a colostomy bag due to her missing organs.

The repeat sexual offender, named Cho Doo-soon, was given a sentence commutation for temporary mental disorder caused by drunkenness

Clause 10 of the present criminal law states that those who lack legal capacity due to mental disorder are to be given a commuted sentence and is largely applied to sexual violence cases committed while intoxicated.

Korea, you know I love you, but get your shit together.
