advertising

So, my internet doesn't work. Hasn't worked for about a week now. This explains my lack of posts. Sorry.

July is a month of transition for me. A lot of my friends who I've met over here have either already left, are leaving right now, or will leave at some point during the next 2 weeks. It's sad.

On another note: there's going to be a lot of things that I've gotten accustomed to over here that will be noticeably absent when I go home. One of these things, I think, will be the way that Koreans advertise. Often times, an electronics store or something will hire a woman or two, clad in tank tops and short skirts, to dance outside their storefront while music blares from a set of speakers. It's always grim to see this sight, the girls are 100% dead behind the eyes, emotionlessly flailing around, slaves to rote memorization.

Other places, like a cell phone store or Dunkin Donuts, will have a similarly dressed young woman also outside their store, but in leiu of dancing she just stands there yelling into a microphone, presumably about how great the cell phones or doughnuts are.

Finally, there's an amalgam of these two strategies, mixed with an extra element of absurdity. Occasionally, a particularly ambitious store, will have a couple girls dancing to music while another one yells into a microphone, all while on the back of a small flatbed truck as it drives around the area. It's an extraordinary thing to behold.

So yeah, it'll be weird to go home and just see billboards.
