self-destruction

Last month, a former South Korean president killed himself. When I say former, I don't mean he was president in the '70s or '80s; he was president as recently as 2007. It'd be like if early next year W killed himself. This isn't an anomaly, but rather part of a disturbing trend.

Seven months ago, South Korea's most famous actress killed herself. Eight months ago a Korean actor killed himself. Two years ago, in the span of two months, a Korean pop star/sex-symbol, and a young Korean actress killed themselves. Four years ago another young, famous Korean actress killed herself.

Korea has the highest suicide rate among first world countries. Suicide is the second highest cause of death among Korean teenagers.

Could you attribute this to Korea's materialism, over-emphasis on social status, unrealistic expectations, and a clearly defined -but largely unattainable- idea of "success"?

Yes, I believe you could.
