change

It's been a month since I got sick, and besides a mysterious disease of unknown origin which causes my immune system to try to kill me, it's been the healthiest month of my life. I haven't smoked a cigarette or imbibed a drop of alcohol. I probably haven't gone that long with either or those in 8 years. For the past week I've been going to a gym, twice a day even. I run a couple miles in the morning, then after work I go back and lift some weights and bike for 20 minutes. I still have a big appetite, but I'm being smart about it. I buy fruit and vegetables so that I have something healthy to snack on. I've even decided to stop using semicolons. (I'm not sure what that last sentence means but it strikes me as funny, so it's staying in.)

I've changed. I keep my apartment spotless. I'm organized now. I put things back where they belong, I fold my laundry. I've started cooking. I chop up vegetables and boil potatoes. I've started using the rice cooker that came with my apartment.

I've never had my shit together as well as I have it together now. At least not for this long. Maybe in the past I'd string a few days together, I'd buy some vegetables, maybe a pepper and an onion, and make an omelette and feel like an adult. Then I'd forget about it and a month later I'd find a moldy old onion at the bottom on my fridge, and just leave it there.

I'm not sure where the cause of this change is. At first I thought it might be a side effect of the medicine, but I'm not so sure anymore. Realizing what I can't control has made me appreciate what I can.

  1. So when i quit drinking and started eating healthy because i felt like I was gonna die you were all "damn, remember when you were cool?" but when you do it it's a revalation. Jerk. I know your circumstances are far more dire. Anyways it's a good thing. I feel way better. You prolly will too.

  2. I saw some recent photos of you on the facebook machine. I believe the phrase is "six to midnight." How much have you dropped and how have you been doing it?

  3. Dropped like 50 lbs since June. Got montezumas revenge in Mexico and that kinda started this whole rapid weight loss. That and the aids. I just started counting calories. Kept it around 1000 a day. No sugar, no fast food, stopped getting drunk. No exercise. That's the key to looking in shape but still wanting to die after I climb the stairs. Wasn't that hard at all. I dunno why people stay so fat.
